Attributives and phrase
In this article, I want to talk
about the two simple subject, well those are attributives and phrase.
The first one, let’s talk about the
attributives. So, what is it? The attributives is a word or a word group as an
adjective that is adjacent to the noun it modifies without a linking verb. Example
: clumsy
in the clumsy girl.
There are three types of the
attributives:
1.
Attributives adjective
It is the adjective that describes or modify an attribute
of the noun phrase of which it is a part. for example : beautiful house,
something important, big car, etc
2.
Noun attributives
It is the noun that modifies or describes another noun
attributively and that is optional (it can be removed without affecting the
grammar) ; a noun is used as an adjective. For example : chicken soup, the
attributive noun “chicken” modifies the noun “soup”
3.
Verb attributives
It is the verb that modifies the noun in the manner of
an attributive adjective, rather
than express an independent idea as a
predicate. Example : the man wearing a hat, barking dog, etc.
The second one, let’s move to the phrase. Phrase is a group of word without the subject
and verb or we can find the phrase in the sentence. For example, he is laughing
at
the joker.
The phrase has various function in the sentence. It depends
on its constructions (word it contains). It can be function as a noun, an
adjective, an adverb or as a preposition.
Based on the
function and the construction, phrase are divided into various types ; i.e.
noun phrase, verb phrase, adverb phrase and adjective phrase.
1.

A noun phrase consists of a noun and other related words
(usually modifiers and determiners) which modify the noun. It functions like a
noun in a sentence. Example : the cat, a strange people.
2.
Adjective phrase
An adjective phrase is a group of words that functions
like an adjective in a sentence. It consists of adjectives, modifier and any
word that modifies a noun or pronoun. Example : a great teacher, a
nice red shirt, etc

an adverb in a sentence. It consists of adverbs or other words (preposition,
